Ever rooted for two teams in a competition only to find them both in the final round? Deciding who wins your vote is tough. And the Metal Pack of the Year category of the UK Packaging awards is a case in point…
As can makers for two shortlisted projects – commissioned by Royal Collection Trust and Savoursmiths respectively – we couldn‘t choose between these two fine examples of British manufacturing and design innovation. And we don’t envy the judges their task!
We can, however, give you a quick behind-the-scenes of both projects…
Royal Collection Trust’s Royal Coronation commemorative tea tins
Royal Collection Trust, a department of the Royal Household, was looking for an expert metal packaging supplier with an impeccable track record on sustainability and ethical standards. Low transportation costs, sustainable materials produced using green energy, and a proven commitment to UK manufacturing were high priority on its selection list. There would be no room for compromise for the official commemorative tea tin for His Majesty King Charles III’s Coronation.
The list of must-have product deliverables included seamless integration with the existing commemorative collection, high precision matching for multiple colours and intricately designed artwork, exact embossing and design alignment, user-friendliness, optimal storage and a fast turnaround.
Between Royal Collection Trust’s exacting standards regarding its future partner’s values and high-quality, fast results, one supplier emerged the winner. As a fourth-generation, family-owned, London-based business, P. Wilkinson Containers also ticked the client’s UK manufacturing box. Producing metal packaging on-site using solar power generated by our rooftop panels, we met their sustainability requirements too.
Add in our state-of-the-art digital printing technology and profound can-making expertise, and we were the perfect fit!
Our sister company, William Say, produced these fully embossed 89mm diameter slip lid tins for the occasion. The solid blue background and intricate royal coat of arms are instantly recognisable as the official royal brand, seamlessly integrating with the wider Coronation range, including a shortbread tin supplied by P. Wilkinson Containers.
Savoursmiths giant crisp tin
We’re equally proud of the premium tin we designed and produced for Savoursmiths, a luxury potato crisps brand that seduces crisp enthusiasts globally.
The brand wanted a showstopping, 100% recyclable packaging solution for its four new gourmet flavours. Its supplier would have to both design and produce the packaging.
Together, we opted for a 176mm level lid tin to promote the luxury, innovative and green aspects of the brand. William Say manufactured and digitally printed the tins to deliver a high-impact, vibrant product. Following labelling, tinplate metal handles were riveted to the can.
Designed for sharing, the compelling design and ease-of-use (think: easy lid opening/closing) promote repeated indulgence! Because that indulgence can be spread over days, the robust packaging offers optimal protection from air and light damage, prolonging the integrity of the crispy contents.
Made of tinplated steel and produced by solar power generated on-site by William Say, the lever lid tins also met Savoursmiths’ sustainability needs. The cans are 100 percent recyclable and that includes the handle!
