Bird & Blend – the environmentally friendly, London-based tea company – puts the accent on taste and saving the planet across all its brews. So when it comes to choosing a packaging supplier for its range of tea caddies – including its recently-launched Zodiac tea collection – P. Wilkinson Containers is the company’s go-to partner of choice.
Offering optimal storage, the highest standards in print and tin quality, and proven green credentials, our 74mm (diameter) by 160mm (depth) metal slip lid tins have been chosen many times by Bird & Blend. This packaging format is used for the company’s permanently available blue tea caddy – featuring attractive cloud artwork – as well as for its six-strong collection of seasonal tea caddies.
Where the latest addition to the collection differs from its predecessors is in the printing method. Historically, we have used high-quality litho-printing to deliver immaculate artwork, high-precision colour matching and a beautiful gloss finish on the tea tins. For the Zodiac collection, however, we digitally printed 12 tailored versions of the tea caddy, each of which represents a different star sign. And the results are equally beautiful, eye-catching, high-quality…and glossy!
Manufactured using solar energy by our factory (William Say) in the heart of London, the caddy bottoms are embossed with the ‘Metal Recycles Forever’ logo. This serves as a powerful reminder to consumers that – unlike other packaging materials – metal can be recycled an infinite number of times. Since the tins are produced locally (William Say being one of London’s only remaining local metal packaging manufacturers), Bird & Blend’s carbon footprint is further reduced.

P Wilkinson Containers was approached by Bill’s restaurant chain to help package a new tea product as a retail offering at restaurant sites which included a delicatessen for fresh produce. We also supplied packs for cookies and other promotional products for Bill’s.
Wilkinsons supplied 89mm slip lid tea caddy tins in five different colours. We produced a range of colour swatches and ran a series of colour tests to ensure Bill’s were happy with their final selection of colour and finish. The client selected a satin finish, and alongside the litho printing, the tins also featured embossing with the Bill’s logo, using a bespoke tool.
The final range included Bramble tea in a pink tin; Breakfast tea in royal blue; Earl Grey in light blue; Green tea in lime; and Peppermint tea in a darker green.
A single-origin coffee brand, Alma de Cuba came to P. Wilkinson Containers for a short run of bespoke tins for their imported coffee from Cuba. The tin was for use in London restaurants and markets, and online sales.
Alma de Cuba requires a bespoke full-printed tin, with graphics created by Big Fish, a renowned London design agency. The quality and finish were to be luxurious, to meet the criteria of the high-end restaurants and boutique retailers it would sell from. The final selection was for 1 litre 113mm diameter, 120mm tall lever lid tins which we manufactured on site in London at our William Say factory, before bespoke litho printing.
Bird & Blend – suppliers of loose tea and teabags – first consulted with P. Wilkinson Containers in 2018 before returning to us in the summer of 2021 to become a client. They wanted a tin caddy supplier who could meet short lead times as a local firm, and who could help them improve their environmental credentials with recyclable packaging choices.
Bird & Blend selected a bespoke 75mm diameter, 166mm tall slip lid tin for their tea caddies, which are manufactured in London at our William Say factory. The local manufacturing option was one of the major attractions for Bird & Blend, as they were looking to move away from packaging imports from the Far East and were keen to work with a British supplier.
The bespoke litho printed design is completed at the Wilkinsons site, before Bird & Blend add their signature black label. They have commissioned several versions of the tin, with a range of seasonal and celebration designs.
The Bird & Blend tins also have an ‘eco message’ debossed on the bottom of the tins: ‘made using solar power’. The client is delighted with their green packaging credentials and include them in their own sales pitch: “Using a local supplier, combined with being made using renewable energy generated from Solar Power, this tin has a much lower carbon footprint than tins imported from abroad!”
The Kokoa Collection came to P Wilkinson Containers as a new customer, in search of a packaging solution for their labelled Kokoa Hot Chocolate product. The client wanted to order a short, limited run of just over 300 units.
Kokoa wanted a large branded tin for their hot chocolate drink, and we recommended the 153mm slip lid tin and lid. We offered digitally printed labelling as a solution to provide branding for small quantities, on a plain metal finish. It was so well received by the client we later produced another run with the same tin and an alternative label design.
Highgrove approached P Wilkinson Containers to produce a branded tin suitable for Highgrove Hot Chocolate drink after the packaging we had supplied Fortnum & Mason had been very well received.
We have supplied Highgrove with regular runs since 2016 and the hot chocolate tins are available to buy from Fortnum & Mason in store, and F&M and Highgrove websites.
Wilkinsons supplies Highgrove with a 89mm slip lid tin and lid featuring very detailed artwork with different varnishes.
The tins and lids are litho printed with matt and gloss spot varnish, and lacquered internal surfaces. Wilkinsons also accommodated a design rebrand towards the start of the contract.
