Thorndown Paints, based near Glastonbury in Somerset, is a modern specialist paint manufacturer creating interior and exterior wood and innovative, peelable glass paint.
Founded by husband and wife team, Ben Thornborough and Caroline Thornborough, Thorndown’s brand is heavily inspired by its West Country heritage and its 48 colour palette is named after local fauna and flora and heritage spots in Somerset.
The company needed a reliable and nimble packaging supplier that could meet the demands of increasing product orders.
Thorndown’s eco-friendly, water-based paints are non-toxic, virtually VOC-free (volatile organic compounds) and halogen-free. The wood paint has long-lasting UV protection and can be diluted to create a stained effect. Made from 100 per cent recycled plastics, the peelable glass paint can be used straight onto glass surfaces and simply removed by peeling it off.
It was important Ben Thornborough – Thorndown that the paint’s packaging represented the same ethos as the company – easy to use and environmentally friendly.
To fit this brief, P. Wilkinson Containers’ London factory produced unique metal cans which have a wider diameter of 176mm than a standard 2.5 litre can, making it easier for decorators, DIYers and tradesman to dip a brush into the paint. The cans also have more air space above the paint level making it easier to mix and stir the paint inside when open.
The team also created a special embossing tool which allowed the paint’s logo to be stamped on all sizes of paint can lids from the smallest 150ml to 750ml and 2.5 litres. The manufacturing line also applies the digitally printed labels, which have a velvety, tactile finish and features Thorndown’s iconic fox or crab motif, to each paint can.
“P. Wilkinson Containers’ ability to turn around packaging within a three-week period, half the time of other suppliers, has been essential to the growth of Thorndown Paints. We are able to order smaller quantities of packaging as and when we needed it, saving on valuable storage space,” Ben Thornborough, Thorndown Paints, Managing Director.
Wilkinson Containers is able to hold packaging on-site at its warehouse ready on demand for Thorndown Paints.
We are proud to have been the supplier of choice for Farrow & Ball Paints since well before thier very first printed tins many many years ago. Edward Bulmer Natural Paint have designed a range of water-based, natural paint colours available today, which are inspired by the founder’s interior design background within heritage properties. The paint collection uses non-toxic paint formulations avoiding the use of petrochemicals making them safer and healthier to use. In line with the founder’s environmental ethos, the company were looking for a paint can which was totally plastic free.
William Say helped design and manufacture two improved paint cans, 2.5L and 5L, for Edward Bulmer. Firstly, to enable the company to use an entirely plastic free can, William Say was able to offer a metal handle as well as the can body and the team worked with the client to adjust the specifications of the cans so that they could be used by paint mixing-shaker machines.
Previously, Edward Bulmer had used white tins which were then labelled, so to improve manufacturing efficiency, time and reduce packaging costs, William Say’s cans use pre-printed tinplate which are already branded with the company’s eye-catching leaf design. As well as manufacturing the tins, P Wilkinson Containers also holds a supply of the bespoke tinplate ready for manufacturing, enabling Edward Bulmer to order new stock at short notice.
